without her getting into a hissy fit!

The new(ish) car has a six speed manual box and is designed for eco friendly commuting with stop start and gear change indicator telling you when to change gear for maximum mpg. I can get 52 mpg easily in very cold weather and over 63mpg on warmer winter days.

SWIMBO decided she needs to "borrow it" next month for a weekend when she is going away on a visit so being the caring husband that I am, and very worried, I offer to show her the finer points of the car on a test drive for her.

So after much instruction on what everything does off we go for a 20 mile test run.

Stop Start, "Nah, I don't like that" so she presses the clutch at every stop to get the engine running again. Gear Change Indicator, "Why has it got an up arrow and 5 on the dash?", that tells you to change up and into 5th to economise on fuel, and then it will tell you when to change into 6th "oh she says" and then ignores it and stays in fourth at 80mph for the next 10 miles on a dual carriage way. Result, 42mpg!.

Without getting a black eye should I keep stum or bring it up halfway through country file tonight and see what happens? :tongueout:

Sounds like the car will a get a good old clear out with the change in driving. Think of the reduced mpg as a spring clean and mechanical test to make sure nothings going to let go for the time you take it back! :smirk:

Buy her a car of her own. Some cheap s!$%. Then she won't need your car. She will then have to pay for her own fuel consumption.

Whenever I've driven a car that tries to tell me when to change gear I NEVER match up with what it says. I have tried changing gear according to the display but I find that the car is rumbling along on barely enough revs to keep things smooth and flexible.

Get an auto.
Can't understand why anybody would have a car which tells you when to change gear but didn't do the job.
That would be like your butler telling you there was someone at the door but not answering it.

Auto with flappy paddles to change gear if you want a bit of fun. Job sorted. MPG, it'll do what it'll do, WGAF.

Point taken, washing, ironing, cooking and gardening are her best abilities. I think I will leave it at that.

I've given up trying to get my wife to use a gearbox in a sensible way. I just grit my teeth and cringe when she drives.
I once gave an honest opinion of her ironing ability. I now do all the ironing in our house.

You should try the line from Roger Moore during one of the Bond films when a Bond girl is driving and mashing up the gears, "Does it play any other tune?":smirk:

It is still very much a live phrase but it would be a complete waste of what appears to be (apart from driving) a perfectly adequate and functioning wife.

I do nearly all the driving especially at night as it's apparent mine cannot see properly.
If I'm stupid enough/adequately drunk and she's driving, she goes off the nut at me reaching for the non-existent brake pedal on the passenger side:speechless:

Sounds very similar to our situation. My Mrs has never enjoyed driving and treats it purely as a means to an end. I don't think I've ever come across anyone with less mechanical sympathy.

Mine was told by the optician 5 years ago that her eyesight was borderline as regards the minimum legal standard for driving. She got glasses, said glasses have had updated lenses a couple of times since as a result of subsequent eye tests. Do you think she will wear them for driving...? Nah....too vain.

Is there any wonder I won’t let her drive me around..?
