The fuel tank (tube ?) looks like s stress bearing member of the frame.
Or maybe its the oil tank.

Either way galactically STUPID, if so.

Nice bit of welding though.

Oil tank forming the top frame member over the engine was kind if Fritz Egli's trademark, I've never heard him called "galactically STUPID" before.:speechless:

The 'member' would have to be of sufficient thickness to acommodate the loading and complex moments that such a size and shape would be subjected to. And that would be an absurd excess of weight over a more traditional approach. That is, a 'normal (sized) load' bearing tube connection from head stock to middle downtube(s).

Actually, the more I think about the approach, the more nightmarish it becomes.
