Because it provides a (one way circuit) back to earth that would not be there on a circuit designed for a relay without said diode. It may of course be a parasitic earth hence not a huge draw but enough to flatten a small motorcycle battery over a couple of days; especially if said battery is on its last legs. It may of course simply drain the battery through the relay itself.
