I can't see how having the back EMF protection diode when it's not needed would cause battery drain.
I can see how fitting "A" type when you should have "B" type or vice versa might.

There is a lot of "information" on the net that is based on poor understanding of the facts - of course my comments above may be part of that. ;-)
