Something is drawing excessive current. Have a look at the wires from the alternator to the reg/rec. Also see if the main fuse is close to melting.

Not sure why the engine will only run with the headlight relay unplugged unless there is a dead short to another part of the loom. Check the connector near the headstock on the right hand side right near the top of the frame joint ?? This feeds all the gubbins at the front of the bike re the dash going blank
