If it's the original foam one or even aftermarket item I strongly suggest you junk it and replace it PDQ. Old foam filters have a habit of simply starting to crumble after a few years and the foam bits play havoc with small passageways in carburetors. Many's the owner who's had to get replacement carburetors because they couldn't unblock critical drillings.

Cheap insurance for peace of mind.
