The gaffer tape may have damaged the seal as In over stretched it, I have only ever used a milk carton cut up and shaped like a cone to get the seal on the stanchion initially and then electricians insulating tape as its nice and thin, to cover any marks that could damage the seal as its slides down the fork tube, and dont forget some lube to make the seal slide easier, maybe give it another go with new seals as you have ordered them and as there is nothing to lose now then get some fine wet and dry and try to take the vertical marks out by wrapping the wet and dry around the stanchion and giving it a light rub so you then have horizontal scratches as you would have from the factory, don't go mad but try it, it might just be enough if not you will be replacing or renewing anyway.
