Did it hesitate before you started all this stuff? I would have thought you need to tell it that the O2 sensor is no longer there, otherwise it won't be adjusting something as the O2 varies... do you live on a hill?

You could try an alternative map to see if anything changes, and it is probably worth shoving some injector cleaner in the tank just to be sure - and you should probably change the fuel filter (in the tank) as I bet that's never been done, and it made a big difference to mine....
