I flew to Edinburgh for a meeting last week on BA, and on the return leg, was looking out of the window over the port wing. It appeared that some gaffa tape was sealing some of the joins in the wing panels, and as I watched, the wind got under the tape, and started to tear it. By the time we had landed, there was a section of about 18" missing, and the ends were flapping in the turbulence. When we disembarked, I asked the stewardess if I could have a word with the Captain. She wanted to know what about, so I said it was the condition of the port wing. 'Ah, yes, we had a problem on the flight up to Edinburgh, and an engineer fitted some tape. The Captain became aware on the journey back that the tape was coming loose, so another engineer is on his way to fit some heavier duty tape' When I walked up the jetty, I noticed that the tape was also sealing some panel joins on the side of the fuselage. You can just make out the silver line over the back half of the left wing. Thank goodness it wasn't Aeroflot, or some other dodgy airline..... /media/file/62271.aspx /media/file/62270.aspx

It was the idea of heavier duty tape that made me smile - "No Cyril, use the cheap stuff. If that doesn't work we'll try the dear tackle..."

Rather shocking. Sticky tape would not be allowed on my homebuilt 2 seater and certainly not on a jet FFS! Seriously, I would forward the pics to the CAA. Safety Regulation Group Civil Aviation Authority Aviation House Gatwick Airport South West Sussex RH6 0YR T: 01293 567171 They have a publication called the GASIL who might well like to include them in their safety bulletins.

Scary........ I was 'over the pond' once, nice window seat, counting the rivets on the wing........... when I noticed one or two seemed to be 'MIA'...... I was going to mention it, but seeing as how it might cause a riot, thought better and got plastered instead!!!!

Half my car is held on with gaffer tape. It's great stuff. My aim is to have the whole thing covered by the time it finally dies. Apart from the windows of course, that would be silly.

I'm surprised the Pilot noticed the tape. 1) he'd be more than likely pissed up 2) has he got rear view mirrors like
