Gonna need new tyres in the next 1-2 months, anyone have any ideas what would be best, the original Metz or roadtyres?

Apart from John Young I very much doubt that this bunch of Explorer riding ponces have yet done sufficient miles to answer your question Russ :tongueout:

What have the Metzlers been like? I have just put some on my XC. I wanted Michelins, but the lazy froggy basterds haven't been making any 21" fronts lately. Was a shame as the Michelins were going to cost me £188 & the Metzlers cost £225. :frown:

The Metz have been good, enough to scrape the pegs a few times in France. I am looking to get about 6,000m from the back but the front looks shot as well so I will change the set. The front does tend to "move" when crossing white lines or in lorry ruts but apart form that they have been OK. Apart from mounting pavements I do not intend to go off road so not looking for a off road tyre.

Not very difficult on this version of the Tiger.

Metz Tourance seem to last well, but not so good as the Bridgestones I believe.
Michelin Annakee get good reviews too.

I had some Avons road tyres on the 955 and they were truly brilliant on the road in wet or dry. Handy as they did a 19" front.

I have Conti Trail Attacks on the 955. If you're sticking to the tarmac, it's a brilliant choice. Sticky and seems to wear very well too.

Read a few comments about this with the Explorer and I think another bike but I can't remember the details.

Unusual isn't it as I think most folks go through two rears for every front? (I'll leave this as is for the witty remarks!)

Yup I agree the Rocket was one front to 2 rears but to me the chunky pattern of the Metz seems to make them go out of shape quick, or it could be.......

a. My GP racer type skills when braking into corners
b. My Superbike skills in fast corners
c. Overloading the front due to my stately girth (fat bastard)

Multistrada wears front and rear tyres equally.

If you only do road miles, i'd go for some Dunlop Roadsmarts ( i think they do a 19 inch front).

Conti Trail Attack .......... I got 10,500 miles on the first rear and 19,000 miles on the first front

I doubt you will get anywhere near that on an Explorer Russ what with you being a riding God an all

The Trail Attack is basically a Road Attack only with a fair bit more tread :thumbup:

The Bridgestones on the XC had done 8,300, the back was squaring off but the front was nearer the wear markers than the rear. I think they would have got to 10K. But didn't want to risk them with going away in a couple of weeks time. With the back tyre being squared off like it was the bike was very twitchy over white lines etc.

When i see these enormous miles on tyres i wonder about the riding style - i too am looking to replace Tyres on my X12 but i have to say the oem tyres were excellent and my confidence in the roadholding was very high compared to other bikes i have had - i have done 4500k and i can feel when you go off the edge now the grooves are feathered - the X12 does have a hooligan engine and half my mileage has been loaded two up so i am not too worried - on my Busa - once the centre was trounced - not hard - it felt like riding on a threepenny bit.

I know you start to adapt as the mileage goes on but these massive mile tyres must be fully compromising the handling at the end of their life - and while tyres arnt cheap - enjoyment and confidence has a higher priority for me - just my 2 cents

so i'm going back to the Tourance XPs :drink:

+1 ....your life depends on the quality of the rubber surely?

My back (oem) tyre was completely squared off after 4500, put Anakee 2's on and 1500 miles later they're hardly scuffed!

Got the front in the garage only half worn but don't think I'll go back to Tourances after the Michelins.

As with every tyre though it's vital the pressures are right - ran them about 3 psi over standard for a hundred miles or so and it was bloody horrible nor sure why I thought it might have been a good idea either
