Spurred on by Pickle Jim, I stripped the clutch at the last service (30,000 m) to see why my gearbox had got so clunky and awkward. Turns out one of the plain metal plates that are splined onto the inner basket had stuck in its splines, and was dragging. It was 2 from the back, so its restricted movement was holding back those behind it as well. Measured all the plates for thickness and warping, but all were absolutely as new. Cleaned everything up, polished sticking plate to remove any marks, put it all back together with a new cable. Now its much better, and needs a far gentler push on the lever to change.

Might have a look at that myself. Sure the gearchange isn't as slick as it was.

Its a bit of a pain because you have to take the starter reduction gear casing off, and the front casing the holds the sprag etc. in order to get at one of the bolts in the clutch cover. So much nicer to ride though now - definitely worth doing.

Will leave it till the Autumn, in that case. It's not bad, just memory says it used to be better. It'll have cleared 60k by then, so it won't hurt to have a look at the plates etc anyway.

Good call Chris, I'll check mine out soon as it's due an oil and filter change anyway. did you mange to reuse the gaskets? I wonder if it will help to eliminate the numerous neutrals mine has?
Chris S Effingham, United Kingdom Premier Member Posts: 6,263 Sprint ST (05->) 20 Jun 2012 09:11
No, new gaskets - £24 for the three of them, and you need a new 'o' ring for the starter motor too. Quite interesting to take it apart though, and see how the sprag is set up.

Been thinking of doing this myself but wondering if I could make up a special spanner to get that odd bolt out.

The cover is on dowels about 1/4" long. I dont know if you would be able to clear these with the front covers still on..?

Ok , I'll not waste my time then. Anything I need to watch for when taking the sprag etc off.

Not really - there's a few wavy washers and spacers that can drop out, but its all pretty straight forward.

I think the hardest bit is probably going to be cleaning the old gasket material off. A job I bloody hate
