The only advantage I can make out is that they're lighter

Just bought one for my Cafe Racer project as it is ridiculously small and claims the same output as the lead acid lump it replaces. Unfortunately as I haven't finished building I don't know what it's like.

If you're good at soldering, just purchase 4 (or 8 for over 750cc) A123 M1 cells: http://www.electricwingman.com/power/a12...

A 4 cell 2300mah pack can deliver bursts of 120A which is more than enough to start most bikes. I've been using one on my TT600 for over a year now and it cranks it over great. For bigger bikes you can use 8 cells, two lots of 4 in series, then put in parallel. That would give enough current to start pretty much any car! The charging voltage of these packs is exactly the same as a lead acid, 14.4V, but the nominal voltage is 13.2V and they hold their voltage very well under load which makes them perfect for cranking engines over.

Excellent tip there Mr Sup.

Got it and jeez is it light, turns over better too. Although I was needing a new battery anyhow. Will see how long it lasts, with the charging mod I did years ago the last lead acid lasted three years.

Did you end up soldering cells together or buy a ready to go battery?

Apologies for jumping in- if you just wire up these batteries will they charge off the alternator like a regular battery, or do you need a special circuit in-between?

Talking to RC people ideally you wire the cells separately (for top up) as well as in series (for use) but in practice as long as the cells are properly charged and balanced at the outset the bike will usually keep it right.

I'm going for an 8 cell for the injected Strumpet but trying a 4 cell for one of my carbed bikes

So far so good with ebay item I bought from the USA.

Charging well and really fast cranking. I used to remove the lights fuse to do maintenance when I needed the ignition on.

Now I can leave the fuse in place and the lights on for ages and it still cranks fast
