Best food pub round here is the Levington Ship. The Shannon is very good as well.
For a special occasion the Salthouse Hotel, Ipswich has a fantastic restaurant.
Also, if the pub produces good grub you can be almost certain the bar cares about the quality and condition of their ales.

not been there for years, used to be THE pub to eat in but then went down hill, perhaps I'll give it another look 
I see more of me in-laws now they are 65 miles away than I did when they were 10 miles away in Loughton
