Why is it my local VW dealer want £1500 to replace two cats on a Golf MKV. Yet when you get underneath there is only one and the local exhaust guys will replace it for £320?

It is probably the case that VW (and other makes) will try to rip you off. However, my neighbour had a 'national quick fitting branch' replace the zorst on a Toyota because of Toyota's seemingly ridiculous quote. Well, 'twas done, but now the car has a loud, unpleasant, rasping zorst note and the engine management light stays on!
Local company surprised me when they replaced a cat on a ladies Peueueueugeot. £90.00 I use them as they charged me £40.00 for the rear box when rip off Krap Fit wanted £115.00
It would indeed - but the zorst emissions have been checked and all seems to be in order. I cancelled the MIL for them but it's on again. I suggested changing the O2 sensor, (again, huge difference between Toyota and motor factor for the part) but so far they haven't. Car's ten years old or so, they don't seem to be fussed. ATEOTD, it's worth very little.
