maximus vegetatorus: I've found on the web vary from 20-40+ MPG & a range of 120 - 200+ miles
I used to get around 140 miles before the light came on I'm not sure what that equates to MPG wise? Probably around 40mpg?
maximus vegetatorus: Rear tyre life? Again varies from 2k - 10k+
I know this all varies depending on how it is ridden, but would an average of 35MPG, 180 range & 5k tyre life seem about right?
Not worried about the cost so much as the practicalities of touring on it.
I would say rear tyre life around the 3000 mile mark but they can square off quite quickly. Quite a few fit rear car tyres with a flat profile and swear by them. Theses are probably the guys who get 10k plus out of their rear tyres?
maximus vegetatorus: I've also read that they can be a bit of a handful on bumpy roads & can bump you out of the seat. Are they that bad?
I'm so tempted by one. I prefer the looks of the classic kitted out for touring, rather than an actual touring version, but am undecided at the mo.
Any help would be much appreciated
They don't seem to stay on stock rear shockers very long and they can be a real handful when cornering
The Rocket III has a 240 rear tyre and the Touring version a 200 section. From a touring perspective IMO the 10,000 milee service intervals has got to be a winner
I didnt know the Tourer had 16" wheels (180 section)
Quote: Choose the Rocket III Touring and enjoy a mile-munching custom touring motorcycle with a unique character and charisma. Suspension has been tuned to achieve high levels of comfort without compromising control, while the with 180mm rear tyre and 16 inch wheels make for surprisingly agile handling.
I'd love a new big Tiger but reckon it'll be around £12k kitted out. I'm not paying that for a bike. I'm thinking about getting the R111 as I've always wanted one. In a couple of years there'll be a few second hand big Tigers around, so maybe trade the R111 in then. At least I would've owned one
How's yer backside going to cope with the sat back upright position?
There's a wine red one near me for about 2.5 K, but they're getting old now and a bit thirsty compared to modern tackle. Gotta be as late as possible and Azure Blue or Graphite really.
Don't know about the riding position yet. Need to ride one first, but doubt it'll be any worse than any other bike I've had. I've had numb bum on all of them
anyway, ignoring the puerile repetitive humour ... yes, a loaner for a day from JL.
It had strange 'highway' pegs, mounted on a bar parallel with the engine for adjustment .... everytime I put me feet down, my shins whacked the f!$%er .... and the gearshift was hard to get used to ...
The R3 itself was brilliant on the move (only about 12 miles journey on b-roads west of Chertsey into Chobham) .... enjoyed it immensely, unbelievable grunt, and altho I was taking it well easy it handled fine on some interesting bends ....
Tempting as it is, I do want to ride one first. Even an hour on one should cover the doubts I have.
I sort of set me heart on a rocket, until I managed finally to ride one on a road I know well, It then became apparent that it was a friggin death trap, well not quite that bad but I couldn't get it around corners like I wanted, maybe my riding style and I use the word "style " in a very loose way, so I took it back and bought something else
My Tiger lives in the garage now. In fact it only ever comes out for Frettours
Am waiting to see if they can get hold of a Rocket for me to try. They don't have a single demo in their network. Poor bastids are really having to work for this possible sale.
maximus vegetatorus: If anybody can help it would be much appreciated.

I've only had my Rocket for about a month now.
Not ridden since the early 1970's.
About 18 months ago bought a Bonneville America, it was OK but felt a bit light on the road, and I didn't like the front end, it felt like it wanted to drift all the time, the ribbed tyres seemed to follow all the lines and cracks in the road.
Early this year changed it for a Thunderbird, that felt a lot better, heavier but more stable, no front end wander, bit sore on ass on bumpy roads.
A month ago was passing local Triumph dealer and saw a Rocket on the forecourt. Asked to give it a test ride and did about 15 miles on B roads with very little traffic, so got the feel of it in the bends without worrying about anyone up me arse and having to look in the mirrors all the time.
It's a bit heavy and not so easy to change line once committed, but it's also very tame at low revs, I don't find it a problem around town, I don't bother too much about filtering anyway.
On the motorway Its very stable, gets you away very quick.
After 15 miles, I went back and put down a deposit.
The Bonneville felt OK after a long break from biking. The Thunderbird put a smile on my face. The Rocket, well for me it just got better
At the end of the day you just have to find one to try.
Only complaint so far, sore arse, got to get better shocks on the back its great on smooth roads, but does not like potholes, but then the roads are crap just about everywhere, had a £2800 quote to fix damaged front suspension on the car, worked out cheaper to trade it in.
Actually all three bikes were a bit hard on the back suspension on some of the roads around here.
R3 Ditch the rear shocks & fit 440's. I use Russel Day Long seat much better now. IMHO the Rocket 111 is the best looking & most powerful Triumph, well mine is anyway
