Got my baffle chamber welded today and reassembled the end can and cut down the carbon sleeve and fitted / drilled for rivets. I still need to get some rivets to stitch it back together tho. The end caps were in poor condition so I spent around an hour or so getting it back to a reasonable state, sanding them down with 400 w&d paper then used reducing grades of garyflex blocks (these are brilliant rubberised blocks with different grade grit through them. Had them in the garage for years and forgot about them) then used Solvol Autosol to polish back to a shiny finish. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex...
This front sprocket nut/speedo sensor actuator arrived today. Strange thing. Gunned the old one off and refitted the new one ready to sort out my speedo sensor mount. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex...
Removed the suspension rocker from the Geep and compared it to the ZX9 one. Slight difference but surprisingly the front bearing which is bolted through the frame is the same bearing in the 86 bike as the 97 one, although the mount itself needed slimming down to 36mm from 40. I pressed out the bearing (it was in good condition) to save it being full of alloy swarf when grinding and using a 1mm slitting disc cut a sliver from each side of the rocker and dressed back with a linishing disc. Then I pressed back in the bearing and used the shorter sleeve from the Geep one (still amazed it fitted) and refitted the dust seals. I still need to modify the width of the swingarm mount for the dogbones before it is completed but it bolted up ok and is now down on it's wheels. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex...http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex...http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex... I reassembled the subframe to see how she sits. I can also sit on it with both feet flat on the floor. Shortarse, me?
Ta m8. Not quite happy with the exhaust, I may change the link pipe yet and get it kicking up a little sooner. Pleased with how the end can turned out though for £30.
Ta Blizz, the subby is obviously shorter now and I will have to mod the undertray to accept the battery box but I think it works well. I can also get a street tail tidy now if I want.
Kinda what I meant. The only thing I don't like about the street is the little duckbill that pokes out of the rear, I'd like to get rid of that and re-design the lamp surround a little. We'll see.
Also had to sort out some sort of bracket to retain the front of the seat. It seems the easiest solutions are usually the quickest. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y148/ex...
Lyn, the angle of the can isn't right IMHO, I think it "jars". It would look a lot better if it followed the lines of the bike and matched the angle of the rear bodywork. Then the whole bike would flow. Looking pretty damned good in all fairness mate.
Oh, and those twin headlights? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!
Nothing's set in stone yet and I didn't cut anything so it can always go back on. I may even prep the bike to accept either depending on my mood. Only takes about an hour to swap it all out.
Nice one Jim, get some pics up then m8. I absolutely LOVE Katana's. Get signed up on http://www.customfighters.com. there some real nice projects on there.......and mine.
It's gonna get both front ends. I have decided. I will prep and paint the fairing frame and get new bolts and spacers and a new screen, then I will get hold of a flyscreen thingy for a street and get both front ends painted. 2 options, 1 bike. Thats how I roll baby.
It's a streetfighter not a production bike so the finished article won't appeal to everyone anyway, by the time it gets a screen and belly pan it'll look better and I'll still have the option of the geep nose fairing. Until it's complete and in full colour it's gonna look unfinished anyway.
No problem nige, s' what i was after. So far this thing stands me around £600 and i've made about £200 back on the bay and i'm really enjoying the build and thats what its all about.
